NCBirds.com is the intellectual property and creation of Fred Hurteau. This site was originally created to provide amateur bird enthusiasts with photos and information they can enjoy and use to help them identify and appreciate the birds that visit their feeders at home. It has since been expanded to also serve as an source for stock photo licensing of bird photography. A sister site, OuterBanksGuidebook.com provides an outlet for stock photography of the Outer Banks, coastal scenery and nature photography.

Fred's interest in capturing images began at the age of 10 with the family's 8mm movie camera. Years later, while serving in Vietnam, he bought his first 35mm SLR's. He later served as a photographer and photo lab technician with the communications office at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

After military service, he attended commercial art school, which provided additional applications and opportunities for his photography. This was when his interest in nature photography, and birds in particular, took over as his main focus. Upon completing art school, he began work as feature photographer and writer for a local newspaper, where he also ran the photo lab. Within a few months he moved on to a Commercial Artist position with a community college, where photography, film processing and printing took up much of his time during the eleven years he worked there. A year as Art Director for a large offset printing company followed. Then he started his own computer animation and video production firm. Fred spent ten years shooting video, both in the field and in the studio, and editing in linear and non-linear formats. Today, still photography is part of his present full-time career as a Computer Graphics Illustrator, animator and web designer.

In 2003, Fred upgraded to digital SLR photography, which has elevated this hobby interest to the category of "serious" hobby. If you wish to contact Fred or inquire about photographic prints or stock photography licensing, you may use this easy email form.
