Tricolored Heron, White Ibis and Snowy Egret in the
sound-side marsh near Bodie Island Lighthouse, Outer Banks, November 2005
NCBirds.com is a collection of original photos by Fred Hurteau. Presently the identification collection and gallery contain well over 900 photos covering 75 species. All species represented here are frequent or common to North Carolina. This began as a hobby interest, but it has continually grown more serious. Some of the best photos are available in the gallery for licensing as stock photos.

The photos presented by the three categories "Songbirds & Garden Birds", "Game Birds & Shorebirds" and "Field & Forest Wildfowl" are meant to help amateur bird enthusiasts identify the birds they see at home. The informal information is meant to help promote interest in learning about birds. It should not be considered as authoritative or scientific, nor is it an all-inclusive collection.

Red-bellied Woodpecker female feeding fledgling in May
Most of the "Songbirds & Garden Birds" were photographed at home, right outside the window. You might read this early "how-to article" describing the first photo/feeder setup created for this purpose 30 years ago. My photo/feeders have gotten more "sophisticated" since this original article, but you would still easily recognize the setup I currently use at home for what it is. The greatest change is updating to digital SLR photography, but the basic photographic information is still valid today. If you'd like to take bird photos for a hobby, it might help get you started.

Ring-billed Gull, Pamlico Sound, February, 2005
Most of the "wildfowl, waterfowl, gamebirds and shorebirds" were photographed around ponds, lakes and along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Some of these photos can also be found on another newer "sister site" to this one, OuterBanksGuidebook.com, along with a great variety of scenic and nature photography.

Please note that I am NOT an authority on birds. I'm presently using the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 4th Ed., and the National Audubon Society's The Sibley Guide to Birds as my identification resources. But if you find any images you feel are misidentified, I would appreciate hearing about it by e-mail.
